SLG Coordinates Session titled “From Data to Impact in Green Deal Data Spaces” at DATAWEEK 2025

On May 27th, 2025, in Athens, Greece, SLG coordinated a session titled “From Data to Impact in Green Deal Data Spaces (GDDS)” as part of DATAWEEK 2025. The session brought together experts from across Europe to discuss advancements in environmental data management and sharing under the Green Deal Data Space initiative.
The event featured a series of presentations covering key aspects of the GDDS, including its technological foundations, use case demonstrations, and deployment strategies to support the EU’s climate and sustainability objectives.
Dr. Stamatia Rizou (SLG) opened the session by highlighting the value creation potential of data within the Green Deal framework. Richard Stevens (IDC) introduced the SAGE project, a pan-European initiative building an interoperable GDDS to integrate and enrich environmental data for broader accessibility.
Nikos Mellios from the University of Thessaly (UTH) presented the ENFORCE project, which empowers citizens through innovative tools for environmental regulatory compliance, combining citizen science, spatial intelligence, reproducible AI, and visualization techniques.
Valeria Catalano (EUSPA) emphasized the role of EU Space data in smart cities and downstream industry competitiveness, while Nuria de Lama Sanchez (IDC) showcased data-driven innovation for smart communities within the European Data Space.
Dr. Vasileios Baousis (ECMWF) presented on leveraging European Earth Observation repositories like DestinE and Copernicus to enhance environmental monitoring and predictive capabilities.
Technological aspects of secure and semantic data access were discussed by Gerasimos Antzoulatos (CERTH) and Ioannis Chrysakis (Netcompany-Intrasoft), focusing on interoperability and collaborative data management.
Linda Kleemann (GFA Consulting Group) highlighted AI’s potential to extract actionable insights from unstructured data, fostering “green data communities” that support sustainability efforts.
The session concluded with a panel discussion emphasizing that technological innovation, stakeholder engagement, and viable business models are crucial to driving value creation in Green Deal Data Spaces.
This event showcased ENFORCE’s important role in shaping Europe’s data-driven approach to sustainability and environmental governance.
