New Case Study Factsheet: Improving Soil Remediation in Flanders, Belgium
A new factsheet is now available for Case Study 8: Improving soil remediation in Flanders, Belgium, exploring how citizen science can help assess the presence and behaviour of pollutants in private gardens.
The case study focuses on the bioavailability of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and heavy metals, including cadmium and nickel, in soils within the Province of Antwerp, particularly in areas located near heavy industrial activity.
Citizens will play an active role in the monitoring process by planting specific test plants in their gardens and monitoring soil conditions. The plants will help assess how pollutants are transferred from the soil into plant tissues, providing insights into the potential exposure of plants to contaminants.
By involving residents directly in environmental monitoring, the case study aims to generate valuable data on soil pollution while strengthening public participation in understanding and addressing local environmental challenges.
The new factsheet presents the approach in more detail and highlights the potential of citizen-generated data to support soil assessment and remediation efforts in Flanders.
