ENFORCE featured in CORDIS Results Pack on citizen science for healthier cities

A new article about ENFORCE, published on the European Commission’s CORDIS website, explores how can citizen science help protect the environment and strengthen the connection between public observations and environmental law question as part of a thematic collection on citizen science for healthier cities.

The article, Bridging citizen science and law to protect the environment, is part of a CORDIS Results Pack highlighting EU-funded research and innovation that uses local environmental observations to support healthier urban environments.

Published in six languages, the article showcases ENFORCE’s contribution to connecting citizen-generated evidence with environmental monitoring and compliance. By exploring how observations from citizens and communities can inform environmental protection, the project contributes to ongoing efforts to make environmental governance more accessible, participatory and responsive to local concerns.

Connecting citizen science with environmental compliance

Citizen science offers opportunities for people and communities to contribute to environmental monitoring by documenting changes and collecting observations in their surroundings. However, ensuring that this evidence can be used effectively in environmental decision-making and compliance processes remains an important challenge.

ENFORCE addresses this challenge by working to strengthen the links between citizen science, environmental monitoring and environmental law. Through its research and collaborative activities, the project explores how citizen-generated evidence can contribute to identifying potential environmental non-compliance and supporting the work of relevant authorities.

Bridging the gap between public participation and formal environmental processes is an important step towards strengthening environmental protection and enabling citizens to play a more active role in safeguarding their local environments.
