ENFORCE Contributions Featured in New Publication on Citizen Science and Environmental Law
A new publication exploring the relationship between citizen science, university research, and law features two contributions stemming from the work of ENFORCE partners.
La ciencia ciudadana y su metodología en la investigación universitaria. Algunas contribuciones desde el Derecho brings together perspectives on the legal dimensions of citizen science, including its role in environmental monitoring, evidence gathering, and compliance. Published in Spanish, the book is the result of the First International Conference on Citizen Science and Law, coordinated by the University of Málaga’s Faculty of Law.
Two chapters draw directly on work developed within ENFORCE:
- “EC-DRL: nivel de preparación y madurez para el cumplimiento normativo ambiental mediante datos participativos y observatorios ciudadanos”, authored by Vanessa-Sarah Salvo, Karen Soacha-Godoy and Jaume Piera from ICM-CSIC/EMBIMOS. The chapter presents the Environmental Compliance Data Readiness Level (EC-DRL) concept, exploring how participatory data and citizen observatories can contribute to environmental compliance.
- “La scienza civica e il monitoraggio civico come allerta per gli illeciti ambientali: prospettive da casi concreti”, by Anna Berti Suman of A Sud, examines civic science and citizen monitoring as tools for identifying and reporting environmental violations, drawing on concrete cases from Italy.
Together, the contributions reflect a central question within ENFORCE: how can citizen-generated environmental data become meaningful, reliable, and usable within legal and regulatory frameworks?
The publication contributes to the growing discussion around the relationship between citizen science and environmental law, complementing ENFORCE’s work on data readiness, citizen participation, and environmental compliance.
