Amsterdam Oost Citizen Science Initiative

Local Context
Amsterdam Oost is undergoing significant development, including the Amsterdam Science Park, new housing, and infrastructure changes. The area is linked to Amsterdam’s Main Green Structure and supports rich biodiversity that necessitates active monitoring. The city boasts a vibrant citizen science community focused on environmental sensing, governed by strong Dutch and EU environmental laws. 

Planned Actions
To enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services, collaborative data practices will be implemented. Citizens will be empowered with tools and skills to record and value biodiversity data, assisting local and EU officials in environmental monitoring for compliance. This initiative will utilize the Making Sense methodology and existing citizen science tools to support community-driven biodiversity data collection, complemented by the Waarneming.nl biodiversity visualization tool and the Urban Ecology Field Atlas. 

Expected impacts
The initiative aims to increase citizen engagement in biodiversity monitoring, contributing to the European Green Deal’s goal of biodiversity protection. The capacity for citizen science will be built to record changes in local biodiversity and inform policymakers, fostering a collaborative approach to conservation.
